Helm, an expert in marketing and climate change, shares her thoughts on experiencing climate anxiety as a parent, and raising a child to be environmentally conscious. "My research has involved climate change for about 10 years, but it became really personal when I had my child," she says.

A month of events includes music, dance and poetry as well as special performances during men's and women's basketball games. "It's so important for the University to recognize and celebrate its diverse community not only during cultural heritage months, but throughout the year," says Lehman Benson, vice president for Black advancement and engagement. "The University's Black History Month offerings will showcase how the community has helped shape the worlds of entrepreneurship, music, literature, scholarship and more.

The mural – designed and painted by students in associate professor Kelly Leslie's class – adds color to an outdoor space enjoyed by residents at B'nai B'rith Covenant House. "I really want to focus on working with community partners that give back to their own community in some way," Leslie says.

Staff Council leaders will detail advocacy efforts around the University's financial action plan at their January meeting. And, artwork by your colleagues and their families will soon be showcased in the "On Our Own Time" exhibition.

Learn how unexpected discoveries involving black holes, tree-ring dating, planets and plastics have helped shape scientific research. "The lecture series discussions will hopefully help people understand how science works, including the unexpected and thrilling twists and turns that can arise from the scientific discovery process," says Carmala Garzione, dean of the College of Science.

Volz is being remembered for his innovations in artificial joints. "Known as an innovator, visionary and collaborator, Dr. Volz combined his love for practicing medicine with his passion for teaching and research," Michael Abecassis, dean of the College of Medicine – Tucson, wrote in a tribute.

Sonia Colina, Regents Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, discusses the need for properly translated study materials to improve the diversity of research study participants. "Translators have their own positioning in the world that comes with a set of conscious or unconscious values and knowledge that bias how they read and write," she writes. "Translation is a process of interpretation regardless of how objective a translator aims to be."

If you want to build a better apology, be willing to break gender stereotypes. "Violating expectations can show that you've taken the time to really craft an apology that is going to matter to the person and effectively deal with the trust breach," says Sarah Doyle, associate professor in the Department of Management and Organizations.

This year's campaign also netted $191,000 in monetary donations for more than 200 charitable causes. "UA Cares initiatives definitely build a sense of community and help us be forward-thinking about what problems the community is facing now and may face in the future," says Nick Hilton, coordinator of UA Cares. "People want to be part of the solution."
