Regis Ferriere honored by French government

Regis Ferriere, professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, has been presented with the Ordre National du Mérite, an honor awarded by the president of France. 

The award recognizes distinguished achievements in civil or military service.

Ferriere is the deputy director of the France-Arizona Institute for Global Grand Challenges, which works with the French National Centre for Scientific Research, or CNRS, to boost interdisciplinary research in areas including arid lands, food security, renewable energy, water and space exploration. He is also director of IGLOBES International Research Laboratory, which fosters interactions between the French scientific community and University of Arizona researchers.

Ferriere was presented the award in October when a delegation from CNRS visited campus to meet with senior leadersh and learn about the latest University of Arizona research and innovations.

Karthik Kannan, Dean of the Eller College of Management

Karthik Kannan named Information Systems Society distinguished fellow

Karthik Kannan, dean of the Eller College of Management, has been named a distinguished fellow by the INFORMS Information Systems Society. The honor recognizes scholars who have made outstanding intellectual contributions to the information systems discipline.

Kannan, who holds the Halle Chair in Leadership in the Eller College of Management, joined the college in 2022. His research focuses on areas including data on consumer interactions with digital information systems and the integration of digital technology into all areas of a business.

The INFORMS Information Systems Society seeks to foster, promote and distribute research on the use and impact of information technology in organizations. Kannan was honored on Oct. 20 at the ISS award ceremony during the 2024 Conference on Information Systems Technology in Seattle.

Erika Pérez, Associate Professor, Department of History

Western History Association honors Erika Pérez

Erika Pérez, associate professor in the Department of History, has won the Gordon Bakken Award of Merit from the Western History Association. The award recognizes exceptional service to the field of Western history and to the association.

Pérez, who has been with the university since 2012, focuses her research on areas including Colonial America, the borderlands, Indigenous North America and the history of gender and sexuality in the American West.

The Western History Association promotes the study and teaching of frontiers, homelands and borderlands in the North American West. Pérez was honored in October at the organization's annual conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

Romero honored by Pete C. Garcia Victoria Foundation

Elaine Romero, associate professor in the School of Theatre, Film and Television, was presented with a sculpture from Chicano artist Zarco Guerrero for winning the Professor Alberto Rios Outstanding Literary/Arts Award.

Elaine Romero, associate professor in the School of Theatre, Film and Television, is the 2024 recipient of the Professor Alberto Rios Outstanding Literary/Arts Award from the Pete C. Garcia Victoria Foundation.

Named in honor of Arizona's first poet laureate, the Professor Alberto Rios Outstanding Literary/Arts Award recognizes exceptional contributions by higher education professionals whose work significantly impacts the Latino community.

Romero is a prolific playwright whose plays have been presented across the United States and internationally. Her work has been featured in more than 50 publications.

The Pete C. Garcia Victoria Foundation was established in 2008 to help advance low-income communities in Arizona. Romero was honored in September at a ceremony in Phoenix.
