As Tucson celebrates Rodeo Week and the tradition of La Fiesta del los Vaqueros, the University of Arizona Rodeo Club prepares to take its turn in the arena at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds. In this Q&A, the club's faculty sponsor, Samuel Garcia, talks about the club's past and present and the opportunities it provides students to develop skills on and off a horse.

In recognition of International Mother Language Day, linguistics professor Janet Nicol talks about the benefits of speaking more than one language. In addition to cognitive benefits, being multilingual "makes people more empathetic, making them understand what it might be like to live in a particular culture," she says.

University speakers embraced the "Spirit of Wonder" as they shared expertise on asteroid chasing, how to hack the immune system, communicating through dance and more at TEDxUArizona.

Staff members are invited to attend a forum about the financial action plan. Also: Giving Day brought in more than 1,900 donations, and the Outstanding Faculty Awards happen next week.

Mark your calendars: Leap day is Feb. 29. Regents Professor Renu Malhotra explains why we need leap year, why we skip it once a century and why we sometimes need to add leap seconds.

President Robert C. Robbins and interim CFO John Arnold encourage the campus community to work together in navigating the changes coming as part of the University's financial action plan. "This is one of the greatest research universities in the world. We are going to find a way to solve these problems, together," Robbins said at a Jan. 29 leadership forum. More than 140 pieces of art were entered into the workplace exhibit and competition, from pen and pencil drawings to photography, sculptures, paintings and even jewelry. "Every year has something of a theme, and it's never planned," says Pamela Wagner, exhibit coordinator. "This year, black and white is big. And cosmic, abstract entries. It's really interesting to see that happen."

Help promote the fourth annual Giving Day by using graphics, Zoom backgrounds and other resources created by the University of Arizona Foundation. "We know from our own experience, and data we have from other universities holding similar campaigns, that people are much more likely to give when they hear about an opportunity from someone they know," says Krista Voth, senior director of annual giving. "The networking is key."
