Update on the University of Arizona Campus Master Plan
At the beginning of the academic year, the University of Arizona resumed development of a new Campus Master Plan to guide how the main campus in Tucson will evolve over the next decade and beyond. After months of research, planning and gathering community feedback, the plan is nearly complete.
This document will serve as a roadmap to support the university's land-grant mission and strategic imperatives and outline a long-term framework for campus development, including guidance for land use, facilities, infrastructure, mobility, sustainability and resiliency.
Campus engagement
Since the process started, the university facilitated extensive engagement to gather input and share information with campus partners, including deans, Faculty Senate, Staff Council, research leaders, Athletics, operational units and neighborhood groups.
The comprehensive outreach effort included:
More than 70 engagement meetings, including nine workshops, 27 focus groups and 26 committee meetings
A campuswide open house held when the project first started that gathered more than 4,000 comments
Six neighborhood meetings that generated more than 450 comments and engaged representatives from 10 neighborhood associations
To support engagement and keep the campus community informed, the university shared project updates through several channels, including this Lo Que Pasa story.
Learnings from the engagement process
Throughout the engagement process, several themes and priorities emerged.
Renewing academic, research, residential and core campus infrastructure to support long-term resilience
Modern, affordable on-campus housing to attract and retain students while strengthening the student experience
Supporting future growth through strategic redevelopment, adaptive reuse and more efficient use of existing buildings and infrastructure
Investing in spaces and facilities that strengthen research, innovation, instruction and student success
Expanding the network of open space, bike and pedestrian routes while improving connectivity to the city of Tucson
A final draft presentation summarizing the plan’s major findings and recommendations is available for review on the Campus Master Plan website, along with previous presentations, meeting minutes and other resources. To share feedback with the project team, email masterplan@arizona.edu.
Next steps
In the coming weeks, the draft will be refined, then shared with university senior leaders for review, ahead of submission of the final document to the Arizona Board of Regents for consideration and approval later this year. Once approved, the full plan will be shared with the university community.
The project team extends sincere thanks to everyone who provided feedback and participated in engagement opportunities. Your contributions have helped us create a plan that reflects our shared priorities and vision for the future of the university.
