Chief Facilities and Planning Officer Josh Wright is announcing the development of a new campus master plan that will set forth the concepts and guiding principles for how the main campus in Tucson will evolve over the next decade and beyond.

What is a campus master plan?

The Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) requires each state university to maintain and periodically update a comprehensive campus physical development plan that aligns new strategic investments, capital projects and resource allocations with institutional priorities for future success.

At the U of A, the ongoing campus master plan process will:

  • Serve as a comprehensive roadmap for the university's future, integrating land use, facilities, infrastructure, mobility, sustainability and resiliency planning in support of its land-grant mission and strategic imperatives.

  • Help the university anticipate, respond and adapt to emerging technologies, evolving teaching and research needs, and new opportunities for long-term planning.

  • Build upon the university's rich history to deliver an exceptional environment for learning, discovery and collaboration that adapts to our community's changing needs while advancing student success and improving institutional resilience.

A participative and consultative planning process

The Office of Facilities and Planning will work with university leaders, various campus partners and Ayers Saint Gross, a nationally recognized planning and design firm, to develop a data-informed and inclusive planning process. The team will assess current conditions, analyze growth scenarios and identify opportunities to enhance the campus experience.

This process will offer a range of engagement opportunities, including open forums with faculty, staff, students and members of the Tucson community.

Opportunities to weigh in on aspects of the plan will begin in the spring semester when draft materials are ready to share with the community. Input is welcome at any time via email at masterplan@arizona.edu

Timeline and next steps

An advisory team composed of representatives from units and colleges across campus will provide strategic insight and institutional perspective that reflect the university’s shared priorities and values. Listening sessions, walking tours, and meetings with campus partners are already underway.

The planning process is expected to be completed by the end of the spring and the final plan will be submitted to ABOR for approval by fall 2026. Updates and informational materials will be shared on the campus master plan website.
