Alejandro "Alex" Ramirez, assistant dean for academic and student affairs and professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine at Iowa State's College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named senior associate dean for academic programs and faculty affairs at the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine.

Ramirez, who holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a Ph.D. in veterinary microbiology from Iowa State University, is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. Along with a passion for veterinary education and helping others, Dr. Ramirez brings a solid clinical background, years of private practice experience and extensive academic knowledge to his new position. His past involvement as an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education (COE) site visitor provided an invaluable opportunity to see how other veterinary schools successfully deliver education training programs and will help inform the Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine in its accreditation process.

"The college is so excited to welcome Dr. Ramirez to this critical leadership position. His expertise will be a great value to our ongoing success," said Julie Funk, dean of the college of veterinary medicine.

The College of Veterinary Medicine has admitted its second full cohort of 110 students. Classes will begin August 16.
