Subject: Campus Traffic Impact During Spring Fling, April 9-17
Date: Apr 03, 2018

Spring Fling is the largest student-run carnival in the nation and crucially raises money for over 40 campus clubs and organizations each year. We want to make sure the campus community receives complete information about the event and is properly informed of impact of Spring Fling setup on campus. The event runs from April 13-15.

Here's what to know about impacts to traffic ahead of this year's Spring Fling:

University Boulevard Closure

Starting Monday, April 9, at 6 a.m. until Tuesday, April 17, at 6 p.m., University Boulevard (on the UA Mall) will be closed between Cherry Avenue and Campbell Avenue in order for Spring Fling to begin configuring the event area. Temporary fencing will be set up on this portion of the Mall for the entirety of the closure.

Transportation affected by this closure includes the following:

Motorists

There will be no eastbound or westbound traffic allowed on University Boulevard between Cherry Avenue and Campbell Avenue.

Sun Tran passengers

The Optical Sciences bus stop on University Boulevard will be temporarily closed. The stop for routes 9 and 15 will be at the corner of Campbell Avenue and Third Street. Stops for express routes 102 and 103 will be relocated to Second Street at Cherry Avenue on the north curb.

Bicyclists

Detour signage will be posted. Bicyclists coming from east of the closure should use the bike lane to travel south on Campbell Avenue to west on Enke Drive, and north on Cherry Avenue.

Bicyclists coming from west of the closure should use the bike lane to travel north on Cherry Avenue to east on Hawthorne Street, north on Warren Avenue, east on Second Street, and south on Campbell Avenue.

All bicyclists should cross Campbell Avenue using the stoplight at University Boulevard and Third Street.

Enke Drive and Cherry Avenue Closure

There will be a construction closure at Enke Drive and Cherry Avenue from Monday, April 9, to Friday, April 13. This will result in the suggested temporary detour of westbound bike and pedestrian travel on campus during this time because of closures at University Boulevard.

Transportation affected by this closure includes the following:

Bicyclists

Alternative bike routes and temporary bike lanes will be in place for bicyclists commuting to campus. Please click here for a detailed map.

Pedestrians

There will be signage directing pedestrians to the proper routes around the enclosed fenced area.

Cat Tran passengers

Red, green and purple routes will be affected. Please see information posted inside the Cat Tran for re-routes.

Cherry Avenue Closure

There will be soft closures of Cherry Avenue south of Hawthorne Avenue and north of Fourth Street at the entrance of the lot near Optical Sciences. Hard closures will go up at the same time in the center area between North and South University Boulevard. The closures will be from 3:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday, April 13; from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, April 14; and from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday, April 15.

Event parking

There is an event fee of $5 to park in Cherry Avenue, Sixth Street, South Stadium and Second Street parking garages. There will also be a $5 fee to park in the following lots on a space-available basis: 6098, 6097, 6093, 6090, 4057, 4144, 4164 and 4052. Meter rates will be as posted.

Parking & Transportation Services will provide free visitor parking in surface lots north of Speedway Boulevard or south of Sixth Street after 4 p.m. on Friday, April 13, and all day, Saturday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15.

There is free parking in the following garages on Saturday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15: Highland Avenue, Park Avenue, Main Gate and Tyndall Avenue.

Trash

Spring Fling will send volunteers through the western part of Sam Hughes to pick up trash Saturday and Sunday mornings, as well as early Sunday evening.
