The University of Arizona has once again earned a place alongside the world's top academic research programs for water resources. UArizona is ranked No. 2 in the U.S. and No. 8 globally in water resources in ShanghaiRanking's 2023 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, released Friday. UArizona also earned a top-five U.S. ranking in geography (No. 4 in the U.S., No. 34 globally).

"We are proud to see our research scientists recognized with another top-tier ranking," said University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins. "The university's decades-long work in the field of water resources is one of our defining characteristics. As issues surrounding water security, sustainability and climate resiliency continue to impact the world, our expertise across a full spectrum of academic disciplines will help bring about solutions we all need."

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects scores more than 5,000 global universities across 55 subjects in five categories (natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences) based on the number of papers authored by an institution in an academic subject area, the number of papers published in top journals, the amount of international collaboration and the total number of staff members that have won significant awards. More than 1,900 universities across 104 countries are included in the final ranking.

UArizona also earned a top-10 ranking in library and information science (No. 9 U.S., No. 10 global).

Other top rankings include:

• Earth sciences (No. 13 U.S., No. 30 global)
• Aerospace engineering (No. 14 U.S., No. 42 global)
• Atmospheric science (No. 17 U.S., No. 30 global)
• Ecology (tied for No. 18 in the U.S., No. 51-75 globally)
• Sociology (No. 29 U.S., No. 50 global)

ShanghaiRanking's institutional rankings were first published in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities and the Graduate School of Education (formerly the Institute of Higher Education) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. The rankings are updated annually, and since 2009 have been published and copyrighted by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.

UArizona also earned a pair of top marks in Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2024 by subject, released Oct. 25. UArizona ranked No. 65 globally and No. 29 in the U.S. in physical sciences, while ranking No. 92 globally and No. 37 in the U.S. in social sciences.
