Digital Mammography Now Available

May 30, 2001

For the first time, state-of-the-art digital mammography is available at the Tucson Breast Center, operated by the University Physicians. Digital mammography produces breast images through computerization rather than X-ray film.

"For women the main advantage is it's much quicker than traditional mammography," said Dr. Per Granstrom, the center's medical director. "For radiologists it's a more efficient way to store and compare images over time."

This procedure also provides much clearer images of breast skin than the old technology he said.

Screening mammograms cost $125 with most insurance plans covering the cost. The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammogram for women over 40. Call 326-6267 to schedule an appointment.
