The University has won its eighth Government Finance Officers Association award for financial reporting
The University has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for its comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2020. This is the eighth consecutive year the University has received the honor.
The certificate is the association's highest honor in governmental accounting and financial reporting and recognizes reports that show a "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate an institution's financial story. The organization says recipients are chosen by an impartial panel.
The team that created the report includes the following members of Financial Services: Lisa Rulney, senior vice president for business affairs and chief financial officer; Nicole Salazar, vice president; Stacey Lemos, assistant vice president/comptroller; Bethany Prim, assistant comptroller; Steve Kelly, assistant vice president, treasury; Tammy Strom, director, accounts payable; Michelle Meyer, assistant director, payroll administration; Stan Park, senior manager, treasury operations; Jennifer Pfennig, senior manager, accounting; Chris Pings, senior manager, treasury accounting; and Michele Correia, communications manager.
The GFOA represents public finance officials throughout the United States and Canada and boasts more than 20,000 members.
Sangita Pawar named an APLU Council on Research fellow
Sangita Pawar, vice president for operations in the Office of Research, Innovation and Impact, has been named to the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities Council on Research's fourth cohort of CoR Research Leader Fellows. The fellowship program is designed to help new vice presidents, vice chancellors or vice provosts for research, or those aspiring to those positions, to develop needed knowledge and skills.
Pawar, who is also a research assistant professor of nutritional sciences, joined the University in 2008 and held leadership positions in the College of Medicine – Tucson and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences before being named to her current position in 2018.
The fellows were announced earlier this summer. The fellowship lasts 12 months.
The APLU is a research, policy and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the work of public universities in North America. The association's membership consists of 244 public research universities, land-grant institutions, state university systems and affiliated organizations. The APLU Council on Research includes senior research officers at the nation's public research universities.
NACUBO selects University for sustainability award
The University has been given the 2021 Excellence in Sustainability Award from the National Association of College and University Business Officers. The award recognizes institutions for a campus innovation, process or program that advances environmental sustainability in higher education or promotes progress toward a more environmentally sustainable future.
The selection committee was particularly impressed with the Compost Cats program, which is part of the Office of Sustainability, according to materials from NACUBO. Compost Cats partners with the city of Tucson to take food waste, manure and other organic material from businesses and homes and transform them into compost for local agriculture and landscaping.
The University will be honored at the NACUBO 2021 Annual Meeting, which will be held virtually next week. NACUBO is a membership-based organization representing more than 1,700 colleges and universities throughout the United States.
