Kundu Receives 2017 Founders Award From American Society of Mechanical Engineers

Tribikram Kundu, a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, received the 2017 Founders Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The award recognizes exemplary achievements in nondestructive evaluation and engineering. Kundu was given the award for his contributions to both basic and applied research in nondestructive testing, which involves evaluating a component and its parts without destroying them, and for his work in structural health monitoring by ultrasonic and electromagnetic techniques.

The award also recognizes the more than 300 technical papers Kundu has helped write – 166 of which have appeared in peer-reviewed journals – and his five research monographs and two textbooks. The award is given by ASME's Nondestructive Evaluation Engineering Division.

Kundu was named the founding editor-in-chief of ASME's Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation, Diagnostics and Prognostics of Engineering Systems in 2017. He has been at the UA since 1983.

Xin Named Fellow by IEEE

Hao Xin, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named a fellow by IEEE, an organization that aims to advance technology for the betterment of society. The organization announced Xin's fellowship in January.

Formerly known as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE is composed of members from electrical and electronics engineering as well as other industries.

Fellowship is IEEE's highest grade of membership. Xin was selected for his contributions to electromagnetic metamaterials and 3-D printing of metamaterial structures. Kwai-Man Luk, the chair professor of electronic engineering at City University of Hong Kong, nominated Xin for the award.

"His research outcome has not only enabled efficient fabrication of electromagnetic metamaterials, but also led to new designs that were not able to be fabricated before," Luk wrote.

Xin began at the UA as an adjunct professor in 2004.

Rozenblit Named Fellow of Society for Modeling and Simulation International

Jerzy Rozenblit, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named a fellow of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International, which aims to advance "the use of modeling and simulation to solve the real-world problems."

Rozenblit will be recognized at the organization's Spring Simulation Multi-conference in Baltimore in April.

Only 1 percent of the society's membership can be fellows, and fellows must have career accomplishments in modeling and simulation that bring "significant value to society." Rozenblit's work on models and devices that train physicians in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery were cited in his selection for fellowship.

"It is certainly very nice to have the recognition of colleagues and co-workers," Rozenblit said. "It's reaffirmation that what you're doing makes sense."

Rozenblit, who is also a professor of surgery, served as head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2003 to 2011. He was named a Distinguished Professor in 2009, and holds the department's Raymond J. Oglethorpe Endowed Chair.

Bauman Receives Association for Specialists in Group Work's Top Award

Sheri Bauman, a professor in the Department of Disability and Psychoeducational Studies, has received the Association for Specialists in Group Work's 2018 Eminent Career Award. Bauman was presented with the award at the association's conference in Savannah, Georgia, on Feb. 2.

The organization, a division of the American Counseling Association, provides resources to members to provide "effective, socially just, and ethical group work in a diverse and global society." The Eminent Career Award is the association's highest honor, and recognizes a member's major contributions or national and international influence to the field of group work, a form of counseling conducted with groups of patients rather than in one-on-one sessions.

Among Bauman's nominators for the award was Sam Steen, associate professor and program director of counseling in the Department of Disability and Psychoeducational Studies. In his letter, Steen detailed Bauman's expertise in group work dating back to her time as a high school counselor in the 1980s. Her contributions to the field, he said, "will remain timeless."

"I get the impression that she has not even reached her peak," Steen wrote. "She continues to engage in her work tirelessly and carries herself in a way that portrays, 'My work is not complete yet.'"

Bauman, who was named an ASGW fellow in 2009, began at the UA as an assistant professor in 2000.

Leslie Receives Graphis Award for Graphic Design

Kelly Leslie, an associate professor of graphic design in the School of Art, has been given a silver award from Graphis.

Graphis, which began in 1944 as a magazine in Switzerland, is now a New York-based organization that promotes and highlights excellence in design, advertising, photography and illustration from around the world.

Awards are decided by a panel of six judges who themselves have won Graphis' top awards. Designs chosen for awards are published in the organization's annuals, which are archived online.

Leslie's self-published design, titled "Caution: Road Narrows to the Right," won silver in the Social & Political category.

Leslie was the only designer from Arizona whose work was included in the 2018 annual.

COM-P Media Production Team Wins Silver W3 Award

The media production team at the College of Medicine – Phoenix has earned a Silver W3 Award for its video promoting the college's Match Day event.

The video highlights the milestone that four-year medical students reach when they find out where they will spend their residency. The video was produced by Adolpho Navarro, media productions manager; media specialists Tabbitha Mosier and Danielle Lachenauer; and senior media specialist Sun Czar Belous.

The Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts judges entries for and administers the W3 awards. The organization has more than 600 members worldwide from a variety of creative disciplines, including online media, advertising, film, television and photography, and sanctions programs to recognize excellence in the arts.

The video, which won in the category of Social Content & Marketing – Events, was judged for its content, technical execution, implementation and overall experience.

Stevens Aubrey Receives Teaching Award From National Communication Association

Jennifer Stevens Aubrey, an associate professor in the Department of Communication, received the 2017 teaching award from the Mass Communication Division of the National Communication Association.

The award is given only to those with at least 10 years of postgraduate teaching experience. Winners must also have been previously recognized by their university, college or department, or another organization.

The award was presented to Aubrey at the association's convention in Dallas in the fall.

University Communications, UA Foundation Win CASE Awards

The Office of University Communications and the UA Foundation each took home an Award of Excellence from the Western region of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. CASE District VII is made up of Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada, the Northern Marina Islands and Utah. The awards will be presented at the Connect West 2018 conference in San Francisco on March 2.

The Office of University Communications earned a bronze award in the General News Writing category. The judges gave the award after reviewing these five stories:

• Runners' Brains May Have More Connectivity, UA Research Shows, written by Alexis Blue, assistant director of media relations and communications
• Treatment of Pain Gets the Green Light, by science writer Robin Tricoles
• After 31 Years, Stolen 'Woman-Ochre' Returns, by Emily Litvack, specialist and writer for the Office of Research, Discovery & Innovation
• After Farewell Kiss, Cassini Takes the Plunge, by science writer Daniel Stolte
• Hormone Could Be Making Your Dog Aggressive, by Blue

The UA Foundation took home a silver award in the category of Fundraising Publications: Annual Reports and Fund Reports (Print) for its 2017 Annual & Endowment Report.

CASE District VII's annual Awards of Excellence highlight best practices in fundraising, public relations, advancement services and communications. Experts throughout the district judge and select the awards.
