Journalist and author Charles Fishman takes an in-depth look at the University of Arizona's reopening efforts. Fishman details the myriad safety precautions implemented over the last six months, as well as the university's cutting-edge work in wastewater-based epidemiology to prevent potential outbreaks.

After a rise in positive COVID-19 cases, the University of Arizona urged students to shelter in place for two weeks. "It was really a way of saying, 'Just don't go out and party in large groups,'" said President Robert C. Robbins, a cardiac surgeon.

"The more we spend now to help people stay in their homes, the quicker they can recover, and the quicker our economy can recover,” says Keith G. Bentele, an associate research professor at the College of Social and Behavioral Science at the University of Arizona whose work focuses on poverty, racial inequality and homelessness.

About 80% of the Pride of Arizona Marching Band began in-person instruction on Monday with proper COVID-19 safety protocols in place.

"Fairy Tale Architecture," a book co-written about Kate Bernheimer, an associate professor in the University of Arizona's Department of English, assigns design professionals to imagine the places where characters from children's stories outwitted their enemies and usually lived happily ever after.

The University of Arizona has released a Hispanic Heritage cultural logo and will be releasing additional branded cultural logos throughout the year to celebrate the diversity of its students, staff and employees.

"This is really a chance to welcome new voices and amplify those that have not been heard," said Michael D. L. Johnson, a microbiologist and immunologist at the University of Arizona.

Planetary scientist Jack Holt of the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory said that Mars was probably much too cold for even hypersaline water to exist as a liquid – and if it did, then liquid water would also exist in regions that looked the same in the radar maps.

The Arizona Institutes for Resilience brings together a number of university units and programs focused on better understanding environmental challenges and developing solutions.
