Jennifer Carlson, a 2022 MacArthur Grant-winning sociologist at the University of Arizona and author of the forthcoming book "Merchants of the Right: Gun Sellers and the Crisis of American Democracy," writes about why Americans own more guns per capita than anyone else.

What might be the world's oldest tree – a bristlecone pine named Methuselah that is thousands of years old – is hidden in plain sight somewhere along the 4.5-mile Methuselah Trail in the Inyo National Forest in California. Even photos of it are rare – the internet is littered with pictures of old and gnarled bristlecone pines mislabeled as Methuselah. "Current conditions for some trees are worse than they have ever been," said Matthew Salzer, a research scientist at the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research at the University of Arizona.

About 100,000 pages of Arizona newspapers from historically underrepresented communities will be digitized, providing a more complete perspective of paramount events that shaped 20th century history, from the Great Depression to World War II. Dogs see the world through their noses. Their exceptional ability to recognize specific scents helps them find bombs, guns, drugs and human remains, and point to some diseases. Now a study has found that dogs can do something just as remarkable: sniff out stress in people. "The dogs can differentiate something about human odors in stressed vs. non-stressed states, but not necessarily that they know anything about how a person is feeling, or what it means when the humans are stressed," said Evan MacLean.
