The University is now part of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning network, which focuses on preparing grad students for their future careers in academia. "The program can be a great way for graduate students to get a head start on future job searches and teach them how to more fully align their teaching and their research interests," says Kristin Winet, program administrator for CIRTL@UArizona.

Lisa Elfring draws inspiration from K-12 instructional methodology in her work to enhance both the student and instructor experience through personalization, technology and evidence-based teaching strategies. "As somebody who is trained as a scientist, I know there's an incredibly rich and diverse set of research literature that we use as a basis for all the scientific discovery," Elfring says. "As an instructor, however, you don't always realize there's equally strong educational best practices literature to help you understand what works, what doesn't, and in which circumstances."

Glenn Schneider, a research professor at Steward Observatory, is an "umbraphile," a fancy word that means "shadow lover." More practically, it means someone willing to do just about anything to see a total solar eclipse – such as traveling to Iceland and boarding a small plane to watch a celestial event that lasts a fraction of the time it takes to, say, get up from your sofa and draw the shades.
