As the first senior vice president of Native American advancement and tribal engagement, Nathan Levi Esquerra oversees efforts to improve the success of Native American students, identify and promote tribal interests, and build programs and research capacity in ways that honor and respect tribal sovereignty and the needs of Native nations and tribal communities in Arizona and beyond. "I define success as reaching your true potential," he says. "Whatever that potential is, I want to be an advocate and help tribal nations and tribal students reach it."

The University has created a logo to mark National Hispanic Heritage Month as part of a broader effort to celebrate the diversity of students and employees. More are planned for Native American History Month, Black History Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. "The icons within each logo tell the history and story of these different groups," says Thomas Harris, assistant athletics director for diversity, inclusion and employee engagement. "Not only will it be a source of pride for students, faculty and staff, but it will build connections with the broader community as people learn the story behind each symbol."

The three-year plan addresses the realities of the ongoing pandemic, with no projects proposed in the first year. The final two years of the plan include a reconfiguration of CAPLA's space, Centennial Hall renovations and expansion, and laboratory renovations.

Monica Kraft, chair of the Department of Medicine at the College of Medicine – Tucson, will head up the All of Us Research Program, a historic effort to collect and study data from at least 1 million people in the United States. Kraft will lead the program's efforts to ensure diverse populations are well represented in the national All of Us database.

The annual UA Cares campaign begins tomorrow with a virtual kickoff event, which includes an agency fair and breakout sessions covering areas of need such as education and health. Participants will hear from President Robert C. Robbins, the campaign's honorary chair, in a video message, and will be eligible to win prizes, including a stay at a local resort valued at $750.

With live performances, productions and exhibits largely infeasible, faculty members in the College of Fine Arts are finding new ways to pursue their creative work. "I've used the past several months as 'lab time' to teach myself new skills and to reach out to other artists to collaborate in a multimedia format," says Autumn Eckman, assistant professor in the School of Dance.
