The C.A.T.S. Academics program helps the UA's 500-plus student-athletes take what makes them successful in their sport of choice and translate it into academic achievement. "We seek to offer robust, comprehensive support to any student-athlete who walks through our doors," said John Mosbach, associate athletics director and director of C.A.T.S. Academics. "We have a tailored approach for our students – not just throwing them into a study hall for eight hours per week."

With schools back in session, some parents face the need to vaccinate their children, which can bring questions and concerns. Dr. Brett Hurliman, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Child Health at the College of Medicine – Phoenix and a pediatrician at Phoenix Children's Hospital, answers a few of the most frequently asked questions.

A team of UA scientists traveled to ponderosa pine forests in Arizona and southern Utah to better understand the North American monsoon. The answers were pulled from tree rings, where oxygen and carbon isotopes mark seasons, water sources and aridity.

Tech.Global deploys student programming expertise to assist faculty on projects that require technological sophistication. "It's an investment, and it's mutual," says Ash Black, executive director of Tech.Global. "Our mission is to stand the faculty up and help them shine as brightly as possible. That's the whole point. The fact that students can be the ones who are involved in that, that's the win-win."

Before the College of Medicine – Tucson's newest class could begin learning to practice medicine, faculty ensured they walked in their future patients' shoes with a weeklong orientation designed to instill the importance of empathy, respect and compassion. "Medicine isn't all science; there is a human piece," says Dr. Andreas Theodorou, professor of pediatrics. "Health care is a caring field."

Two dozen information technology professionals interested in strengthening their leadership skills make up the 2018-19 IT Leadership Academy class. "By increasing the opportunity for IT professionals to develop soft skills, or emotional intelligence skills, the idea was that they would have a lot more opportunity and a lot more mobility inside of the organization," says Tom Bourgeois, executive director of campus IT operations and co-chair of the ITLA steering committee.

When she was in law school, Stacy Butler launched a program that connected volunteer lawyers and law students with clients in need. Today, the law professor continues to help low-income clients through a nonprofit that provides pro bono legal services.

Dieter and Netzin Steklis, professors in the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences, share the most interesting findings from their summer studying animal illustrations in European caves. Among the takeaways: Prehistoric artists didn't paint their food, they didn't use live models, and they never painted themselves.
