The University of Arizona placed in the top 0.3 percent among more than 27,000 higher-education institutions worldwide by the Center for World University Rankings, released Monday.

The UA's ranking of No. 75 was bolstered by the number of UA-led research papers appearing in highly influential journals and how often those papers are cited by peer researchers. The UA's overall score of 50.30 placed it 45th among U.S. universities.

"I am proud to see the University of Arizona recognized as one of the world's best academic research institutions," said UA President Robert C. Robbins. "This ranking reflects our standing as a global leader in groundbreaking research initiatives."

CWUR annually publishes the only global university rankings that use quantitative measures to assess the quality of education, the prestige of faculty members and the quality of faculty research, without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

The UA's ranking by category:

  • Quality of education: 102
  • Alumni employment: 63
  • Quality of faculty: 68
  • Publications: 88
  • Influence: 41
  • Citations: 55
  • Broad impact: 61
  • Patents: 137

The UA also earned top marks in the CWUR's rankings by subject, released in April, placing in the top five in these subjects:

  • No. 1 in limnology (the study of inland waters)
  • No. 3 in water resources
  • No. 5 in astronomy/astrophysics
  • No. 5 in information science/library science
