Just one month after Quacquarelli Symonds named the University of Arizona one of America's top public universities, the international ranking service again recognized UArizona's impact on a global scale.

UArizona is tied for No. 268 globally, No. 56 in the United States and No. 67 in North America in the 2022 QS World University Rankings, released Tuesday. Globally, this represents a five-spot improvement from last year's ranking.

"I am very pleased to see the University of Arizona move up in such a prestigious international ranking," said University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins. "Our mission includes providing premier educational opportunities on a global scale, and we are proud to serve students throughout the world."

QS evaluated 6,415 global higher education institutions to rank the top 1,300 colleges and universities – 145 more than last year's edition – in 97 locations.

QS uses six indicators to compile the organization's world university rankings:

  • Academic reputation (40%): This category is based on survey responses from over 130,000 academics.
  • Citations per faculty (20%): QS measures research impact by dividing the total number of citations of a university's research papers over a five-year period by the number of faculty at an institution.
  • Faculty/student ratio (20%): Student numbers are divided by faculty numbers, giving the global student population some indication of likely class sizes at their chosen institution.
  • Employer reputation (10%): This is based on survey responses from over 75,000 employers about the relationship between institution and graduate employability.
  • International faculty ratio (5%): One of two QS measures of internationalization, this is the proportion of nondomestic faculty at an institution.
  • International student ratio (5%): The second of measure of internationalization is the proportion of nondomestic students at an institution.

UArizona earned its best ranking in the academic reputation category (No. 203 overall).

QS began ranking global institutions in 2004. QS also ranks universities by subject, with UArizona receiving top marks in the following categories in the 2021 update, released in March:

  • Archaeology: 22
  • Engineering – Mineral and Mining: 22
  • Geology: 24
  • Geophysics: 26
  • Library and Information Management: 26
  • Earth and Marine Science: 29
  • Anthropology: 40
  • Linguistics: 67
  • Agriculture and Forestry: 74
