UA Parking Director Marlis Davis Dies

Marlis J. Davis, director of parking and transportation services for the University of Arizona, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, of cancer. She was 61.

Davis began work in the UA's Parking and Transportation Services in 1984 and was promoted to assistant director three years later. As assistant director she was instrumental in the planning and implementation of new services such the Campus Shuttle Program, Bicycle Program and Motorist Assist Program (MAP). She also implemented the central cashiering system in the University's garages.

She assumed the director's position in 1993. While director, she initiated various alternative transportation programs such as Emergency Ride Home Service and Cart Service for the Disabled. She was also integral in the planning and development of several UA parking structures.

In 1995 she was awarded the University of Arizona Staff Award for Excellence, which is among the highest honors bestowed upon a UA appointed professional.

Born on Aug. 27, 1938 in Los Angeles, Davis dedicated much of her life working in public administration in Arizona. She served as director of administrative services and city clerk for the City of Apache Junction, Ariz., and she was city clerk for the City of Sierra Vista, Ariz. Marlis also received "Best of Pima" recognition in 1996, an award given to distinguished alumni of Pima Community College.

In addition, she was elected to the board of directors of the International Parking Institute, was on that institute's board of advisors and was a member of Tucson Transportation Enterprise Area Management Oversight Commission. She was also a member of the Association for Commuter Transportation, the Woman's Transportation Seminar and Soroptomist International.

Davis earned a bachelor of science degree in business and public administration from the UA in 1988. She also held degrees in public administration and construction technology from Pima Community College.

A memorial at Bring's Funeral Home was held on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 29.
