UA Boasts 5 New Fulbright Scholars, Visiting Scholars

The UA boasts five recently awarded Fulbright Scholars among University faculty and welcomes four Visiting Fulbright Scholars for the 2001-2002 academic year.

The U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 faculty and professionals each
year to more than 140 countries, where they lecture or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.

The Visiting Fulbright Scholar Program awards grants to foreign scholars to
come to the United States to lecture or conduct postdoctoral research. Nearly 800 scholars come annually for an academic year or term.

U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program 2001-2002 Grantees


  • Adele M. Parker, associate professor in comparative cultural and literary studies;
  • Michael Frederick Brown, chemistry professor;
  • George Nikolas Frantziskonis, associate professor in civil engineering mechanics
  • Mark Paul Frederickson, associate professor with the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture; and
  • Muluneh Yitayew, professor in the department of agricultural and biosystems engineering.



Visiting Fulbright Scholar Program 2001-2002 Grantees


  • Owen Peter Coaldrake, deputy vice-chancellor, Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia;
  • Goran Lindblom, professor of biophysical chemistry at the University of Umea, Sweden;
  • Irina Viktorovna Sviderskaia, research fellow in the Laboratory of Dendrochronology, Sukachev Institute of Forestry, Russian Academy of Sciences in Krasnoyarsk, Russia; and,
  • Zbigniew Tomasz Ustrnul, professor in the meteorology department of at the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Krakow, Poland.

The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Under a cooperative agreement with the Bureau, the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) assists in the administration of the Fulbright Scholar Program for faculty and professionals.

The primary source of funding for the Fulbright Program is an annual appropriation made by Congress to the Department of State.
