Team Arizona brought home more than 20 medals from the 2000 U.S. Transplant Games, which concluded this weekend in Florida. Seventeen of the 38 Team Arizona athletes -- including 7-year-old Kelsey Cresenzo, the team's youngest participant -- received their transplants at University Medical Center.

Four were liver transplant recipients, two were heart/lung recipients and 11 received new hearts at UMC. More than 1,800 athletes competed in the 2000 U.S. Transplant Games, held June 21-24 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Two thousand donor families also were

"The Games are proof positive that organ donation and transplant work. We're thrilled to be alive and living life to the fullest," said John Landers, manager of Team Arizona and a UMC heart transplant recipient in 1991. "It's an overwhelming kind of experience," added Landers, who brought home a bronze medal in racquetball. "Even if you lose, you've already won just to be there."

San Antonio Spurs forward and former University of Arizona Wildcat Sean Elliott was spokesman for the event. Elliott received a kidney from his brother last year.
