Optical Sciences Honors Faculty, Students

Dec. 15, 1999

Faculty and students in the optical sciences department received numerous honors recently.

Professor Nasser Peyghambarian received the prestigious International Francqui Chair for the Exact Sciences for 1998-1999 at a ceremony hosted by Crown Prince Phillips of Belgium.

The chair is awarded each year by the Francqui-Foundation to three outstanding scientists, one in the field of human sciences, one in exact sciences and one in biological sciences. A symposium in Nasser's honor, held in Bruges on Oct. 18-19, 1999 on the topic of "The Future of Plastic Electronics and Optoelectronics" was attended by more than 80 scientists from 10 countries. At the symposium, Peyghambarian was presented with the Bronze Medal of the Francqui-Foundation for his outstanding activities.

Professor Ewan Wright's work with extremely short laser pulses was the subject of an article in Unisci, Daily University Science News on July 23.

Associate Professor Jose Sasian received a Commendation for Excellence in Technical Communications from Laser Focus World in appreciation for the article "Nonrotationally Symmetric Optics Proliferate."

Associate Professor Poul Jessen's research in using quantum physics to manipulate individual atoms to make the "on-off" switches for future computing was the subject of an article in the Fall 1999 issue of Arizona Alumnus.

Doctoral candidate Robert Boye received the ETEC Award for academic excellence and relevance of work in applied optics.

Doctoral candidate Neal Beaudry was awarded the Arthur G. DeBell Memorial Scholarship for academic excellence, past performance, promise for the future and demonstrated intention to pursue a career in applied optics.

Optical Sciences Center alumnus Blake G. Crowther received the Optical Society of America's Allen Prize in recognition of his contribution to the development of innovative instrumentation for the retrieval of atmospheric aerosol characteristics by hyperspectral analysis of downwelling irradiance.
