Eller College to Dedicate Sands Computing Lab

Sept. 18, 2000

The need was real and Eller College alumnus Louis "Buzz" Sands jumped right in to help. Voila! The Sands Computing Lab for undergraduate students is now a reality!

The 48-station lab is located on the first floor of McClelland Hall and easily accessible to Eller College undergrads. Within five minutes of opening day, the lab filled with students mastering business software, checking e-mail, writing papers, printing reports, looking up schedules and using web-based information resources for class research projects. And it's been that way ever since! The lab will be accessible to students seven days a week during the academic year.

During freshman orientation, the lab was used to take incoming students through the registration process. Registration used to mean waiting for hours on end in long lines to complete paperwork.

"We registered 80 students in less than an hour using the Sands Lab!" exclaimed undergraduate adviser Matt Mars. "Now that's technology in action!" Certainly new students, and their parents, were happier with the new approach.

Louis Sands IV, known to everyone as "Buzz," is a proud third-generation Arizonan and the lab is named in honor of the Sands family. Both his father, Louis Sands III, and sister, Elizabeth ("Bonnie") Sands Reid, also graduated from the University of Arizona.

"Our family is proud of the University of Arizona and of the growing status of the Eller College of Business and Public Administration. I am happy to help make this student resource a reality," said Sands.

The pioneering Sands family played a prominent role in Arizona farming and ranching. In the late 1930's, they founded Sands Chevrolet in Phoenix--one of the state's oldest family-owned automobile dealerships.
