Arizona's football program in May introduced a copper helmet design. Earlier this week, head coach Rich Rodriguez announced that the new copper helmets will debut at the Oregon State game on Sept. 29 – the Copper Game.
Over the years, Arizona football helmets have included a variety of designs using the colors red, white and blue. The Wildcats’ newest helmet design boldly highlights the color copper to pay tribute to the state of Arizona and its great mining history.
“We are going to break out the copper helmet for the Oregon State game,” Rodriguez said. “It's not going to replace our school colors, but it is a tribute to the mining history in our state. The guys will wear them in practice Wednesday and Thursday to get used to the fit. We will let the seniors pick the jersey and pants combination.”
Copper has influenced architectural design on the University of Arizona campus, including its athletic facilities – most notably the ring at the top of the McKale Memorial Center and the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility.
The UA embraces the addition of a copper helmet as a special opportunity to pay tribute to the state of Arizona. Copper will not replace the traditional colors of red and blue, and the copper helmet will be worn on a limited basis.
“We look forward to our fans coming out and supporting this exciting football team,” Director of Athletics Greg Byrne said. “The Copper Game will be a unique opportunity for our fans and a game against an important Pac-12 opponent where the atmosphere will play another significant role in our home field advantage.”
Limited edition Copper Game merchandise, including t-shirts, hats and mini-replica helmets, will be available for purchase starting Sept. 27 at the UA BookStores, McKale Center A-Store and at BearDownShop.com while supplies last. On Sept. 29, the UA Bookstore souvenir stands at Arizona Stadium and Fan Fiesta also will carry these items for purchase while supplies last.
A special Copper Game premium giveaway item will be distributed to every ZonaZoo member in attendance at Saturday’s game. The giveaways will be distributed as students enter Arizona Stadium. Gates opens for ZonaZoo students at 5 p.m., and members are encouraged to arrive in plenty of time to receive the exclusive giveaway.
