UA Mexican American Studies Professor Andrea Romero has a $950K grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration that aims to prevent drug abuse, spread of AIDS among teens.
The $2 million from the Salus Mundi Foundation will be geared primarily to recruiting and retaining top-notch students and faculty at the UA, widely regarded for years as one of the best anthropology department in the United States.
While pursuing her studies at the UA, Candace Galla was actively involved in the American Indian Language Development Institute, which provides training in linguistics, education and language preservation. A three-time UA alumna, Galla continues her work at the University of British Columbia, where she is studying and teaching the importance of indigenous language revitalization, namely through a performance course in hula.
