Media Advisory: UA to Host Mining Summit

• What: Securing Arizona's Future as the Silicon Valley of Mining

The University of Arizona is hosting an invitation-only summit where mining industry, academic and government leaders will discuss what would it take to secure Arizona's future as the world's leading innovator in mining, and what that might mean for the state and the global mining industries.

Mary Poulton, co-director of the UA's Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, will present a side-by-side comparison of Arizona to Silicon Valley to illustrate what it takes to build a world-class innovation ecosystem in a specialized field and the critical role of UA in connecting Arizona's expansive mining ecosystem and workforce development. Other topics include the importance of mining and the mining supply chain to the state, mining's significance to the public sector, and innovations in mining technology and sustainability.

• 9:30 a.m. – Opening remarks (Steve Trussell, executive director of the Arizona Mining Association and Arizona Rock Products Association)
• 9:45 a.m. – The importance of mining and the mining supply chain to Arizona (Keith Watkins, senior vice president of economic/rural development, Arizona Commerce Authority, and Juan Ciscomani, senior advisor for regional and international affairs for Gov. Doug Ducey)
• 10:05 a.m. – Mining's significance to the public sector (Francis McAllister, vice president of land and water, Freeport-McMoRan)
• 10:25 a.m. – Why Caterpillar moved SMT to Tucson (Sudhanshu Singh, global product manager, Caterpillar Inc.)
