TUCSON, Ariz. — Students minoring in fashion at the University of Arizona will showcase sustainable garments in a different kind of fashion show, featuring man's best friend.
Nearly 60 students in the UA's "Introduction to Fashion Retail" course teamed up to transform used jeans into stylish capes for canines. Service dogs from the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, along with some UA employees' pups, will model the designs on the UA Mall. The capes will be raffled off, with proceeds benefitting the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. Dog toys and treats, donated by PetSmart, also will be raffled. The event is free and open to the public but those who wish to reserve a special seat, which comes with a "wag bag" of dog biscuits, scarves and coupons, can do so for $10 – which also goes to the Humane Society. Humane Society representatives will be at the event with information on adoptable dogs. The inaugural Dogs 'n Denim fashion show was designed as a project-based learning activity to teach students various aspects of the fashion industry, including the basics of design, production and branding, said Charlette Padilla, director of the fashion minor and an associate professor of practice in the UA's Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Students also learned about the environmental and social impact of fashion and the importance of sustainable fashion as they worked with donated used jeans and trim materials donated by Alexander Henry Fabrics. "The second largest polluter is fashion," Padilla said. "Our students learned how to take something like a pair of jeans and give it a second life for dogs." In addition to creating the garments, students also produced writeups on the themes of their designs, which resulted in clever brand concepts, such as the Coco Chanel-inspired Chewnel and the Ralph Lauren-inspired Puppy Polo. More information on the fashion show is available on the event's Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/dogsndenim.
