Hundreds of candles lit up the University Mall on Friday as family, friends, colleagues, students and community members shared tears, memories and hugs at a vigil honoring Thomas Meixner, head of the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences.

Meixner, who earned his doctorate from the University in 1999 and returned to join the faculty in 2005, was killed in a campus shooting Wednesday afternoon.
