Students returned to the University of Arizona campus last week for the first week of classes, which began on Aug. 26.
With more than 9,300 students, this year's first-year class is the university's largest. The class includes students from every U.S. state, with a record 4,900-plus from Arizona.
This year's first-year students are also part of the most diverse class in university history: 50% self-identify as ethnicities other than white, up from 49% last year. There was a 6% increase in Hispanic/Latinx students and a 29% increase in Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander students, compared to 2023.
Roughly 28% of the incoming class self-identify as first-generation college students.
The U of A received 58,160 first-year student applications this year, the most in its history.
Students began moving into dorms on Aug. 20, the week before classes started. A survey from U of A Housing & Residential Life found that during the week of dorm move-in, new Wildcats and their families from outside of Tucson contribute almost $10 million to the local economy through visitor spending.
