The University of Arizona earned worldwide recognition in a variety of academic disciplines in the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject, released Wednesday.

"At the University of Arizona, we take great pride in our ability to provide world-class academic offerings across a diverse set of disciplines," said University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins. "Our success in these rankings is a testament to the continued excellence of our faculty, staff and students. It is our emphasis on a broad-based education that helps develop the critical thinking skills our graduates will need to succeed as leaders in a global economy and have fulfilling lives."

UArizona appeared in the top 20 among U.S. public universities in three categories: arts and humanities, physical sciences and social sciences.

In arts and humanities, UArizona held its worldwide ranking from last year, placing at No. 80 out of 565 universities, and moved up to No. 10 among public universities and No. 26 among all U.S. institutions. The ranking highlights the universities that are leading across the following disciplines: art, performing arts, design, languages, literature, linguistics, history, philosophy, theology, architecture and archaeology.

UArizona moved up five spots in the worldwide physical sciences ranking, finishing tied for No. 57 out of 1,149 universities, No. 28 in the U.S. and No. 13 among public universities. This category covers mathematics and statistics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, geology, environmental sciences, and earth and marine sciences.

UArizona cracked the top 100 in social sciences for the first time, placing tied for No. 96 out of 791 universities worldwide, No. 38 in the U.S. and No. 19 among public universities. It highlights the universities that are leading across the following disciplines: communication and media studies, politics and international studies (including development studies), sociology and geography.

UArizona also appears in the following categories. After No. 100, colleges and universities are placed in a range and not given specific rankings:

• 101-125 in Business and Economics
• 101-125 in Education
• 101-125 in Psychology
• 151-175 in Law
• 151-175 in Life Sciences
• 201-250 in Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health
• 201-250 in Engineering and Technology
• 301-400 in Computer Science

In August, UArizona was ranked No. 124 in the world, No. 45 in the U.S. and No. 21 among public U.S. universities in Times Higher Education's 2021 World University Rankings.
