You're invited to an evening of free professional development for all K-12 educators: in-service and pre-service teachers, educational aides, administrators and librarians.
Corridos are traditional Mexican narrative ballads that blend music and storytelling to share tales of history, culture and life experiences. By incorporating corridos into your teaching, you can create an engaging and culturally relevant learning experience for your students. Join us for an exciting and educational workshop focused on integrating these captivating musical stories into your curriculum.
The evening will feature corrido composers and musicians Celestino Fernández and Guillermo Sáenz. Fernandez has spent much of his life dedicated to understanding, composing and sharing the corrido culture. His work is devoted to developing, documenting and preserving the tradition for future generations.
During the workshop we will:
- Discover the history and cultural significance of corridos.
- Explore ways to incorporate corridos into history, language arts and social studies lessons.
- Learn how to analyze corridos as primary sources to deepen critical thinking skills.
- Collaborate with fellow educators and share innovative teaching strategies.
- Access ready-to-use resources and lesson plans for various grade levels.
CDs, curriculum materials and certificates of professional development will be given to participants. Dinner will be provided.
This workshop is organized by the University of Arizona Center for Latin American Studies. It is supported through grant funding from the Title VI National Resource Centers program.
