In honor of Black History Month, Hanson FilmTV Institute and Gender and Women's Studies presents a selection of short films from an extraordinary group of filmmakers depicting aspects of the Black experience.  Screening for free at The Loft Cinema.

Featuring films by: Michèle Stephenson & Joe Brewster, Luchina Fisher, Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich, Sterling Hampton IV and Walter Thompson Hernandez

  • A Black ballerina from Los Angeles performs throughout inner-city neighborhoods while sharing the trials and tribulations she's experienced within the ballet community.
  • Reaching into a filmmaker's familial lineage of black women artists, examining the under-told story of the haunted artist who also inhabits the unique political position of being black and a woman, while also applying principles of music theory and West African performance structure.
  • Lil' Ant is obsessed with Pegasus, the Greek mythological character, since first learning about him at school in Watts, California. He begins to notice imaginary airplane people around his home and yearns to fly with them.
  • An 81-year-old Black American woman speaks about her life as a teacher, author, wife and friend while seeing the last of her living siblings for the first time in 25 years.
  • The remarkable life and challenges of André Chambers, a queer Black man who grew up amid societal clashes in a Southern California beach town.
  • Friends and competitive swimmers Ann and Madeline are on a journey to the National Senior Games, where nothing – not age, race or history – will stand in their way.
  • A look at the influence that hand games played by Black girls has had on the American creative landscape.
