Correa Marquez Among '40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority Health'

Dr. Ricardo Correa Marquez, a clinical assistant professor of internal medicine and program director of the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship at the College of Medicine – Phoenix, has been included among the 40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority Health by the National Minority Quality Forum. Correa Marquez was recognized in Washington, D.C., in April.

The National Minority Quality Forum is an organization dedicated to eliminating "the disproportionate burden of premature death and preventable illness for racial and ethnic minorities and other special populations." Its 40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority Health "represent the next generation of thought leaders in reducing health disparities."

Correa Marquez's research focuses include health care disparities, neuroendocrinology and immuno-endocrinology.

Dr. Khadijah Breathett, an assistant professor in the College of Medicine – Tucson's Division of Cardiology, also was named to the list. Read about Breathett in this UA@Work article.

University Communications Wins National PRSA Award

The Office of University Communications won a Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation from the Public Relations Society of America for a feature story profiling UA student Josh Brewer, a member of the men's wheelchair basketball team. The award was announced May 1.

The Public Relations Society of America is the primary membership organization for public relations professionals. Its Bronze Anvil Awards honor "the best of the best in public relations tactics – the use of social media, video, blogs, podcasts, annual reports, digital newsletters, websites – that contribute to the success of overall programs or campaigns." Award entries are judged by teams of PRSA members across the country.

The office earned the award in the feature stories category for "Unbreakable Spirit: A Student's Journey From the Streets of Ethiopia to the UA." Alexis Blue, senior writer and assistant director of media relations and communications, wrote the story.

COM-P Match Day Video Wins National Award

The Office of Marketing and Communications at the College of Medicine – Phoenix has earned an Award for Excellence from the Association of American Medical Colleges' Group on Institutional Advancement. The team was honored in April.

The Association of American Medical Colleges is a nonprofit organization "dedicated to transforming health care through innovative medical education, cutting-edge patient care, and groundbreaking medical research." Its Group on Institutional Advancement aims to foster the professional growth of the association's members.

The annual Awards for Excellence competition recognizes "the most creative and effective approaches used to promote academic medicine through alumni relations, communications, development, marketing, and public affairs/community relations programs and projects." The awards come in best in show, gold, silver and bronze levels.

The college's "Match Day 2018" video followed 80 fourth-year students as they learned where they would spend their years as physicians-in-training. The video was awarded a silver in the category of electronic communications and the subcategory of audio and video. The award comes with a $200 prize.

Kontak Wins AZTransfer Leader Award

Nicole Kontak, executive director of transfer credit and articulation in the Office of the Provost, has been given AZTransfer's 2019 Transfer Leader Award. She was honored in April.

AZTransfer provides programs and resources to connect students at the state's public and tribal community colleges to Arizona's three state universities. Its Transfer Leader Award "recognizes individual efforts that contribute to the success of the Arizona Transfer System."

In announcing the award, AZTransfer noted Kontak's work to enhance the UA's Transfer Student Center and to provide a "vision that has led to smooth enrollment for transfer students." Kontak recently led a new initiative that allows students to transfer credits from non-regionally accredited institutions.

United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona Recognizes UA, Staff

The United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona recognized the UA and Karla Bernal Morales, senior program coordinator in Government and Community Relations, at the organization's Circle of Excellence Luncheon on May 15. The annual recognition event honors "outstanding community champions who volunteer their time, talent and resources to promote the mission of United Way."

The UA was named the Young Leaders Society Company of the Year. The Young Leaders Society is a United Way group of young professionals who give back to the community.

The 2018 UA Cares employee giving campaign was named among United Way's Top 25 Campaign Leaders, and Morales was named among the Best of the Best Employee Campaign Leader of the Year. Morales led the 2018 UA Cares campaign, which raised $334,000 for UA programs through the UA Foundation and for local causes through United Way.
