As prolonged drought, extreme heat, and wildfires plague the West, Arizona's ability to meet the projected water and energy needs of the future remains unclear. However, increasing anecdotal and research evidence points to the power of partnerships to solve these wicked water problems. The myth that in the West "whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting" is being debunked. Across the state and region, many in our communities are hard at work developing solutions to improve water resiliency through collaboration. As region-wide negotiations continue on future use of Colorado River water, the climate heats up, and communities come to grips with growing populations and fixed or diminishing water supplies, people are recognizing the value of collaborative partnerships. Some ideas that can be implemented through partnerships include weather modification to generate more precipitation, soil amendments that retain more water, forest restoration to minimize wildfire risk, and treatment technologies to unlock new supplies. A public conference this March 12-13, "Implementing Water Solutions Through Partnerships," will showcase some of these developments, engaging participants in the process of sharing ideas and experiences.
In a fitting tribute, the two-day conference is dedicated to the legacy of Thomas Meixner, who was a well-respected University of Arizona professor, leader and water advocate until his tragic passing in 2022. Meixner dedicated his career to preserving the world's most precious resource – water – and inspired students and colleagues to do the same. Day one of the conference will feature academic collaborations, beginning with a large multidisciplinary project involving all three Arizona state universities, which Meixner spearheaded. The program will continue on the evening of March 12 with a poster session and reception. Day two will concentrate on actions that increase water conservation and efficiency, make the most of underutilized supplies, and raise public awareness and knowledge about water issues. Everyone interested in the region's water challenges is invited join the conversation to share and learn about the power of partnerships and collaborations to help solve some of our most critical water resources issues.
