The University of Arizona is one of the world’s top research universities, according to Times Higher Education.

UArizona ranks tied for No. 155 globally, No. 48 in the U.S. and No. 25 among U.S. public colleges and universities in Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2024, released Wednesday. The global ranking represents a 25-spot increase from the previous year, when UArizona was No. 180.

In the new rankings, 1,904 universities (105 more than last year) from 108 countries and regions are ranked. UArizona ranks in the top 10% globally.

"I am thrilled to see the University of Arizona earn such stellar marks from this prestigious international ranking," said University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins. "Our faculty and researchers take immense pride in translating their groundbreaking discoveries into engaging classroom material, and these rankings are strong evidence of their success and impact. "

Times Higher Education is in its 20th year of the ranking global colleges and universities. For the 2024 rankings, Times Higher Education assessed research-intensive universities across 18 performance indicators in five categories, with varying weight given to each:

  • Teaching: 29.5%
  • Research environment: 29%
  • Research quality: 30%
  • International outlook: 7.5%
  • Industry (income and patents): 4%

The methodology has been updated to reflect the outputs of the diverse range of research-intensive universities across the world. This year's rankings looked into more than 134 million citations across 16.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 68,402 scholars globally. Times Higher Education collected 411,789 data points from more than 2,673 institutions that submitted data.

UArizona was also ranked highly in Research.com's second edition of its Best Colleges list, placing No. 94 overall and No. 20 among public research universities.
