May 2, 2019 Media Advisory: 4,500 Graduates, 40,000 Guests Expected at UA Commencement

PARKING AND MEDIA CHECK-IN: Reserved media parking and check-in will be available in Lot 8110, at the southeastern corner of East Sixth Street and North Warren Avenue, across from Arizona Stadium. (See attached map.) Credentialed media will enter the stadium through Gate 5, at the southeastern corner of stadium. Note: Traffic will be restricted on Sixth Street beginning at 4:15 p.m. If arriving after 4:15, you can access Lot 8110 by turning south onto Martin Avenue from Sixth Street, then west on Seventh Street, then north on Warren Avenue. MEDIA RSVP: To ensure accommodations and media credentials for Commencement coverage, members of the media are asked to RSVP by noon Wednesday, May 8. Please email Alexis Blue at ablue@email.arizona.edu with the names and contact information of those attending, and a request if you would like to speak with Dr. Mae C. Jemison, the Commencement keynote speaker. Media who RSVP may pick up credentials between 3 and 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10, in the media parking area (Lot 8110). An area has been reserved for media inside the stadium, on the east sideline of the field, and a mult box will be provided. Media are free to interview students and guests before the ceremony, but will not be allowed to roam on the stadium floor after the ceremony begins. COMMENCEMENT DETAILS UA President Robert C. Robbins will confer about 6,700 degrees on students in the Class of 2019, including bachelor's degrees, master's/specialist degrees, doctorates, juris doctor degrees, medical degrees and doctorates in pharmacy. About 4,500 graduates and 40,000 guests are expected to attend Commencement. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Mae C. Jemison, engineer, physician, entrepreneur, educator and the first woman of color to travel into space. Attendees must abide by the UA's clear-bag policy for entry into the stadium: No outside containers, large bags, backpacks or parcels will be permitted, and all in-hand items must be placed in an appropriate and approved clear bag. All personal items, including those carried by volunteers, staff and other visitors, are subject to search. Note: Media technical equipment is exempt from the clear-bag policy, but all personal items must be in a clear bag. Honorary Degrees and Alumni Achievement Award Honorary degree recipients are Jemison and Victor Smith. The Alumni Achievement Award winner is Andy Harris. The awards and their recipients are: Provost Award: Anita Jones, who will graduate with a Bachelor of Applied Science in human services and a minor in family studies. Robert Logan Nugent Award: Tala Shahin, who will graduate summa cum laude from the Honors College with dual degrees in physiology and Arabic, and Alexa Nguyen, who will graduate summa cum laude from the Honors College with a degree in molecular and cellular biology, with minors in economics and religious studies. Robie Gold Medal Awards: Francy D. Luna Diaz, who will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a Bachelor of Arts in law, and Bryn Deana Sharp, who will graduate summa cum laude from the Honors College with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Latin American studies and a minor in Portuguese. Merrill P. Freeman Medals: Katrina M. Konopka, who will graduate from the Honors College with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, and Yezan Hassan, a quadruple major honors student graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience and cognitive science, and molecular and cellular biology; a Bachelor of Science in Health Science in physiology; and a Bachelor of Arts in Arabic, with a minor in biochemistry.
