Dozens of college students from across the state gathered Saturday, March 28, at the University of Arizona Eller College of Management to pit wits and willpower against one another. Instead of shooting baskets and making dunks, young minds faced off in the Regents' Cup, a speech and debate competition hosted by the Arizona Board of Regents showcasing free speech and civil discourse.
The event featured multiple rounds of persuasive storytelling and Oxford-style debate, providing participants with the opportunity to engage with the theme, "Liberty and Responsibility," in a variety of ways.
"Tonight, we celebrate the hard work, passion and dedication of all of our student orators and recognize their achievements," said Provost Patricia Prelock. "This was my first Regents' Cup, and all of the students were exceptional. I felt captivated and moved – and even shed a few tears. I appreciate the intellectual prowess our students displayed."
Arizona State University won this year's competition, taking the title back from the U of A. The board awards one-time scholarships to the top three winners in each category: $15,000 for first place, $12,000 for second and $5,000 for third. All other students receive a $500 one-time scholarship, along with internship or course credit for their work.
