As the first alumnus to serve as president, he oversaw the University's ascension to the top ranks of research universities. External research funding more than tripled during his tenure.

The current assistant vice president of TLA will succeed David Allen, who is retiring effective April 28 after a six-year tenure of reinvigorating the UA's research commercialization.
