The University of Arizona has again been recognized as a Fulbright HSI Leader by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The honor, announced Tuesday, recognizes the university's high level of engagement with the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange program.

The Fulbright Program created the Fulbright HSI Leader designation in 2021 to recognize Hispanic-Serving Institutions for promoting Fulbright opportunities on campus and for noteworthy engagement with Fulbright exchange participants. UArizona was one of 35 Hispanic-Serving Institutions to be recognized in the inaugural class and is one of 43 to earn the honor this year. UArizona also is one of 24 doctoral-granting institutions to earn the designation.

"The University of Arizona's continued recognition as a Fulbright HSI Leader reflects our unwavering dedication to supporting global scholarship and the importance we place on our designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution," said University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins. "We are thrilled to witness the groundbreaking work by our Fulbright scholars and students around the world."

There are 559 HSIs across the country. For an institution of higher education to be designated an HSI, it must have an undergraduate student enrollment that is at least 25% Hispanic.

The 2022 Fulbright HSI Leaders are recognized for sending and/or hosting U.S. and international Fulbright students, scholars and specialists, as well as supporting on-campus engagement with the Fulbright Program during the 2021-2022 academic year.

"It is such an honor to receive this designation two years in a row, as it further recognizes the valuable work we have done with the university's Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships, housed in the W.A. Franke Honors College," said Marla Franco, assistant vice provost for HSI Initiatives. "Our work continues to generate high levels of engagement and support for Hispanic students as they seek to broaden their experiences and expand their impact through the renowned Fulbright international educational exchange program."

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government's flagship international academic exchange program. Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has given more than 400,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists and professionals of all backgrounds and fields the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research abroad, exchanging ideas and contributing to finding solutions to complex international challenges.

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced the Fulbright HSI Leaders on Oct. 10 during the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities annual conference in San Diego.

Every spring semester, Research, Innovation and Impact, along with the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships in the Honors College, the Graduate College and Arizona International host UArizona Fulbright Week, where the university celebrates and promotes the Fulbright program across campus. Dates for Spring 2023 are still to be determined.
