Does Rain Follow the Plow?

There are many factors that play a role in whether or not it rains, and UA researchers say human activity such as cultivating agricultural fields may be one of them.

On May 27, NASA's Terra satellite captured an infrared image of subtropical storm Alberto's center of circulation hundreds of miles south of the Florida panhandle. A thick band of thunderstorms east of the center extended over the entire state of Florida.

UA Forecast: Below-Average Hurricane Activity

The UA's hurricane forecasting model, known for its accuracy, is calling for fewer hurricanes in the Atlantic this year. Researchers are predicting four hurricanes, two of which will be major — those reaching Category 3, 4 or 5. Last year brought six major hurricanes, including Irma and Maria (each a 5).

Antarctic Ice Loss Ramps Up, Speeding Sea Level Rise

An international scientific team that includes UA geoscientist Christopher Harig reports that a sharp uptick in the loss of Antarctic ice since 2012 is contributing to rising seas.

The UA's Becki Beadling  and Joellen Russell have been working on a $21 million collaborative project, whose goal is to understand the Southern Ocean's acidification, heat uptake, and carbon and nutrient cycling.
