What’s new with Lo Que Pasa?
By Jade Norden, University Marketing and Communications
Beginning Aug. 19, Lo Que Pasa and the UAnnounce Weekly Digest are combining into one weekly email, giving employees a single source for news and updates.
The revamped Lo Que Pasa employee newsletter is now the University of Arizona’s single weekly email for employee news, university announcements and other timely updates.
Faculty and staff previously received employee-focused stories through Lo Que Pasa every other week and memos through the UAnnounce Weekly Digest every week. Beginning Aug. 19, Lo Que Pasa and the UAnnounce Weekly Digest have become one weekly newsletter.
“We’re bringing these communications together to give employees one consistent source with the most relevant news and updates each week,” said Marie-Chantale Maltais, executive director of internal communications in University Marketing and Communications. “Our mission is to make employees’ lives easier by connecting them with the information they need without overwhelming their inboxes.”

Combining these communications also means one fewer recurring email that employees receive.
The newsletter arrives every Wednesday morning, giving readers a consistent time to find helpful information at the start of their workday.
Curated for employees
Employees have a lot of information competing for their attention.
An estimated 392.5 billion emails will be sent worldwide in 2026, according to a 2024 Statista report. Nearly 30% of readers spend two seconds or less reading an email, according to The Litmus Email Engagement Report 2022.
With so much competing for employees’ attention, it is even more important for Lo Que Pasa to prioritize stories that matter to them.
“We look at what's most useful and has the broadest impact,” said Maltais. “Our goal is to provide employees with practical information they can use and understand.”
The newsletter is curated to provide information that helps employees with their work. This includes connecting readers with services and resources around campus and helping them understand university initiatives and how they affect the campus community and support the university's strategic imperatives. Stories also highlight employees and units for their accomplishments and efforts to advance the university.
"We want our storytelling to help employees connect with the university beyond their own day-to-day work," Maltais said. "That means providing context around the initiatives and work shaping our campus community, helping employees build connections across campus and maybe even introducing them to benefits and resources they didn’t know were available."
That approach is reflected in Lo Que Pasa’s most viewed stories this year, such as:
- Discovering the Surplus Storefront, a resource that may be unfamiliar to some;
- Understanding the supply chain transformation, focusing on what employees need to know and why the changes were made;
- A guide to summer stargazing, highlighting faculty expertise and offering something useful to employees outside of work; and
- Connecting to colleagues who brought Commencement to life, spotlighting the employees behind a major university tradition.
Lo Que Pasa includes a mix of news articles, memos and events. Content may include Q&As, employee and department profiles, behind-the-scenes stories, and Awards and Accolades. Photo galleries and video links give readers additional ways to engage with content.
A refreshed reading experience
Readers will also notice Lo Que Pasa’s updated look and layout.
The new Lo Que Pasa graphic connects the newsletter with the U of A’s Southern Arizona roots through a saguaro cactus and mountain outline.
The newsletter features a refreshed layout designed to make it easier to scan and navigate.
When there’s a timely reminder for a broad employee audience, a top banner highlights the information, so employees don’t miss important deadlines or opportunities.
The "In the Spotlight" section highlights one piece of content that is particularly impactful to employees that week.
Memos, previously featured in the UAnnounce Weekly Digest, are grouped together so readers can quickly identify important updates.
The employee news section features stories that connect readers to the people, priorities and work around the university.
The calendar section spotlights selected events with opportunities to participate, learn and engage with the university.
An occasional "Seen on Campus" photo offers a look at the various activities and events happening around the university.
Submitting UAnnounce memos
The process for submitting UAnnounce memos remains the same. Anyone with a university NetID can complete the memo submission form on behalf of their unit, office or program.
Those with action-oriented, time-sensitive updates and deadlines are encouraged to submit a memo. Memos may cover resources and service offerings, operational updates, organizational announcements, personnel appointments, process or procedural changes, policy notices, calls for submissions, award nominations or event series.
Submissions are reviewed each business day and may be edited for clarity and style. Memos are typically published within two business days after the submission.
Memos most relevant to the majority of employees are included in Lo Que Pasa.
