Alyce Sadongei among 'Native Americans Changing the World'

Alyce Sadongei, American Indian Language Development Institute project coordinator in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Sociocultural Studies, has been recognized by digital magazine OZY as one of "The Native Americans Changing the World."

OZY noted that Sadongei was the first Native American to serve as director of the American Indian Museums Study program at the Smithsonian Institution. "Sadongei now leads the University of Arizona and six other institutions in digitizing more than 6,500 recordings of Native American oral histories," according to an article published March 16. "The wealth of information, from tribal council meetings to graduation ceremonies to simply people telling their stories, will be better preserved and searchable for the next generation."

The purpose of this project, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, is to convert tape recordings from the 1960s and 1970s into digital files so that they can be better preserved and easily accessible for future generations.

Oscar López given 2021 AIA Associates Award

Oscar López, senior lecturer in the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture, has won the 2021 Associates Award from the American Institute of Architects.

The AIA Associates Award – open to any associate AIA member, including those with architecture degrees and faculty members in university architecture programs – recognizes outstanding leaders and creative thinkers for significant contributions to their communities and the architecture profession.

López's areas of expertise are design/build, light and shadow, materiality and narrative-based design.

His projects have been recognized with eight design awards from local AIA chapters. He received the 2018 AIA Arizona Associate Award and the 2019 AIA Western Mountain Region Pettigrew Leadership Scholarship.

Lynn Nadel elected to National Academy of Sciences

Lynn Nadel, Regents Professor emeritus in the Department of Psychology, has been elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Members are elected in recognition of prominent and ongoing achievements in original scientific research. Membership is considered one of the highest honors a scientist can receive.

Nadel has published more than 200 scientific papers and edited 24 books. His work focuses on widening the understanding of the functions of the hippocampus that relate to memory and cognition.

The National Academy of Sciences announced the new members in late April.

Sama Alshaibi receives 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship

Sama Alshaibi, professor in the School of Art, was named a 2021 Guggenheim Fellow in Photography by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Guggenheim fellowships are awarded to individuals whose work has demonstrated exceptional capability for productive scholarship or creative ability within the arts. The foundation receives approximately 3,000 applications per year. This year, 184 fellowships were awarded.

Alshaibi will use the award for an image, video and text-based project highlighting the experiences of women and girls in war-torn Iraq.

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation was founded in 1925 by U.S. Sen. Simon Guggenheim and his wife in memory of their son. The foundation has granted approximately $400 million in fellowships.

University receives American Advertising Award

The University has won a 2021 Gold ADDY Award from the American Advertising Federation Tucson.

The American Advertising Awards honor advertising creative work produced in Southern Arizona. The University won an ADDY in the video category for "Wonder Makes Us Serve."

The video was produced by Adrienne Barela, content director in the Marketing and Brand Management office; Arlene Islas, manager of video communications in the University Communications office; Drew Bourland, multimedia manager in Marketing and Brand Management; and Alexandra Cerna, a student in the College of Fine Arts.

The team earned gold at the AAF District 12 ADDY Awards in March and will compete at the national level in June.
