UA Students Launch 'I Will' Awareness Campaign

TUCSON, Ariz. — University of Arizona students have launched I Will, an annual campaign to raise awareness of sexual assault and promote consent through a variety of campus events, including a daily resource fair, movies and speakers. The campaign is led by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona, or ASUA, and arose as a local response to a national issue. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month nationally.

Now in its fourth year, the I Will campaign is the result of efforts by student volunteers and the guidance and cooperation of a number of campus departments and student organizations. I Will originally was launched by UA students in May 2015.

Central to starting the conversation is an I Will pledge, a commitment to end the normalization of sexual violence in society. A video emphasizing the importance of this initiative features several UA student and administrative leaders, including President Robert C. Robbins.

"Students from the University of Arizona wanted to see change in the way we have a conversation about sexual assault," said Matt Lubisich, president of ASUA and co-director of the campaign.

"I think that's the unique thing about the I Will campaign: It's open for all students to take the pledge," said Natalynn Masters, ASUA director of diversity and co-director of the campaign. "It's available for any student on campus to take that personal responsibility to take action."

The public events planned include:

  • Monday-Friday, April 2-6, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., UA Alumni Plaza, I Will Resource Fair
  • Tuesday, April 3, 7 p.m., Gallagher Theater, "The Mask You Live In"
  • Thursday, April 5, 6 p.m., UA Student Union Memorial Center, Sabino Room, "Law & Rape Culture"
  • Friday, April 6, UA Integrated Learning Center 120, "True Tea Live" with Kat Blaque, transgender rights activist
