Public invited to comment on tuition proposal for state universities

March 22, 2000

The Arizona Board of Regents will conduct a public hearing on Thursday, March 30, at 5 p.m. regarding the level of tuition and fees to be charged resident and nonresident students at the state universities.

The hearing will use interactive television to connect the three main campuses with five smaller campus sites. It also will be broadcast on cable television and on the internet. Cable broadcasts will be on People's Choice Channel 46 in Tucson, Cox Cable Channel 7 in Sierra Vista, and at the UA Harvill Building, Room 211. A viewing center website has been established at http://webcast.tv.nau.edu/abor/st-hearing.html.

The hearing will permit the public to offer comments in anticipation of tuition and fee setting at the Arizona Board of Regents meeting April 6-7.

To inform the discussion at the public hearing and the subsequent meeting of the Regents, University of Arizona President Peter Likins announces his tuition and fee recommendations.

Likins will recommend to the Regents the following annual tuition increases:
o Resident Tuition: An increase of $101, for annual resident tuition and fees of $2,360 in AY 2000-2001.
o Nonresident Tuition: An increase of $389, for annual nonresident tuition and fees of $9,800 in AY 2000-2001.
o College of Medicine Resident Tuition: An increase of $450, for annual College of Medicine resident tuition and fees of $9,281 in AY 2000-2001.

Of the $101 increment for resident students, approximately $10 will be allocated to financial aid in accordance with ABOR policies and the balance will be divided equally between information technology and faculty salary increments.

The same amounts will be committed to information technology and faculty salary increments from tuition paid by each nonresident student. The balance of tuition revenues will be used to address critical needs as described in previous state budget submissions. These augmentations will help insure that technology keeps pace with students' educational needs and that the University can attract and retain the highest caliber faculty. Subsequent to these increases, prices at the University of Arizona will remain among the lowest among flagship public universities in America.

In addition to recommended increases in tuition, President Likins will recommend the following new or increased fees:

1) A special class fee in the amount of $510 per student for the summer field camp, "Field Methods in Earth Engineering" (Geological Engineering 417/517), that will cover the cost of conducting the camp at a site in northern Arizona.

2) A non-refundable $500 program fee for students who accept admission to the full-time MBA and related professional master's degree programs and a non-refundable $300 program fee for students who accept admission to evening and weekend MBA programs for working professionals.
3) Increases in the program fees for students matriculating in the full-time MBA and related professional master's degree programs, from the approved sum of $4,000 to $5,000 per year for resident students and from $4,000 to $6,000 for non-resident students matriculating during AY 2000-2001 and to $7,000 per year for resident students and $8,000 for non-resident students matriculating in AY 2001-2002. Increases in the total annual tuition and fees for the evening and weekend MBA program to $12,500 in the Tucson and Sierra Vista areas and to $20,000 at other sites outside the UA's traditional service area for students matriculating spring 2000-fall 2000 and to $15,000 in the Tucson and Sierra Vista areas and to $25,000 at other sites outside the UA's traditional service areas for students matriculating beginning in spring 2001.
