Math touches everyone, from making simple calculations at the grocery store to thinking about a space with 26 dimensions. The mathematics department at the University of Arizona will be offering insights into the discipline through a series of public events April 22-28. Those events include:

Saturday, April 22: A conference for high school students to get a look at math at the university level from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in MTL 123 (located on Lowell Street, immediately east of the Mathematics Building);

Monday through Friday, April 24-28: An interactive public display featuring computer programs, geometric models, a 3-D tile display and actual mathematicians who can explain what is going on, 3 to 5 p.m. in Math 401N;

Monday, April 24: Math Awareness Week reception and Spring Awards Ceremony, 4-5 p.m.;

Tuesday, April 25: Keynote address (Cosmology and the Geometry of the Universe) by Vatican Observatory astronomer William Stoeger at 5:30 p.m.;

Wednesday, April 26: Math Film Festival (The Shape of Space, Hypercube, etc.) at 4 p.m. in Family & Consumer Resources, Room 202;

Thursday, April 27: Daughters on Campus activities, including an interactive math musical performed by the Tucson Symphony String Quartet at 1:15 p.m. in Math 401N;

also on Thursday, math puzzles and games from 2 to 3 p.m. in Math 402; and

Knots in Theory and in Reality: A Window into Mathematical Research, featuring professors Alain Goriely and David T. Gay;

Plus, there will be a contest to see how many jujubees are in the math department polyhedron
