Daykin to Lead UA Police Department

Aug. 15, 2000

Anthony "Tony" Daykin was sworn in as chief of the University of Arizona Police Department at a ceremony on Aug. 14 at the UA Police Department offices at 1852 E. Fifth St.

Pima County Superior Court Judge Pro-Tem Margaret Maxwell, who also is Daykin's wife, administered the oath of office.

Daykin formerly was the assistant chief of police/commander with the Field Services Bureau at the Tucson Police Department (TPD). He has worked at TPD for the past 28 years. During that period he served in a variety of key responsible positions including commander of the Community Services Division; commander of a Field Division; commander of the Information Services Division; commander of the Central Investigations Division and commander of the Administrative Services Bureau.

He started out as a patrol officer in 1972 and was promoted to the grades of sergeant, lieutenant, and captain en route to his current rank of assistant chief of police.

Daykin has a reputation for outstanding professionalism and integrity coupled with superb leadership, organizational and team building skills, said Julius Parker, associate vice president for business affairs, in a memo to the University community.

He is a proponent of community oriented policing, Parker said. More importantly he is acutely aware of the differences between policing in the municipal environment and the University environment; and espouses an operational philosophy that is appropriate to the UAPD mission.

The new chief's orientation plans include visits to the deans, vice presidents and other departments and units based on their operational relationship and interaction with UAPD.

Daykin graduated from the University of Phoenix, earned a master's degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Senior Management Institute for Police.
