80 UA Students to Call Plaza Hotel "Home" Temporarily

Aug. 15, 2000

Due to contractor delays, the University of Arizona has made arrangements for 80 students to stay temporarily in the Plaza Hotel, located at the southeast corner of Campbell Avenue and Speedway Boulevard.

The new 80-bed addition to Pima House residence hall will not be ready for occupancy when students arrive on campus as residence halls open Thursday, Aug. 17.

The UA purchased Pima House, located on First Street and Highland Avenue, in the fall of 1999. At that time it housed 55 students. Due to a campus housing shortage, the UA began plans immediately to build an addition for 80 more students by this fall. The contractor was unable to complete the building by Aug. 1, as scheduled.

The Plaza Hotel, completely renovated in 1998-99, is a short walk from the heart of campus. Students will live with their roommates in double rooms at the Plaza.

Residence Life staff also will stay at the hotel throughout the time students are living there. Residence Life anticipates the stay at the Plaza to be 10 to 15 days. UA staff will provide all necessary moving arrangements for students when they move into Pima.

Residence Life will pay for the students' rooms at the Plaza. Students were notified by letter Aug. 3, and received follow-up telephone calls by Residence Life staff to answer questions and address concerns. Most students reacted to the news positively, but say they are looking forward to moving into the newest residence hall on the UA campus.
