Training the Soldiers of Tomorrow
Four high schools squads whose JROTC programs are aligned with those at the UA were involved in a drill meet coordinated by a group of UA students. In the judged competition, each marching team had to display high levels of professionalism, discipline and an understanding of regulations, among other things, in set form and freestyle formats. Cadet Amy Dodd, a UA senior studying political science, psychology and Russian, said it is the first year the University students have organized such a meet with regional high school groups. Paired with UA student liaisons, the high school students also had a chance to learn about the UA's ROTC program and other offerings on campus. Students also spoke with military recruiters and learned about career options. Cadet Daniel Coffeen, a UA senior studying public health, said: "We really want to encourage these kids to stay in Tucson, to attend the UA and to get involved in the military." Buena High School in Sierra Vista took first place for Armed Regulation, Unarmed Regulation, Unarmed Exhibition and Color Guard. Flowing Wells High School took the award for Armed Exhibition and Luquin took the top award for Drill Down. (Photo credit: Patrick McArdle/UANews)
