Fred Boice was a remarkable Arizonan whose life reflected an enduring commitment to service, leadership and the advancement of our state and university. His connection to the University of Arizona spanned decades and touched nearly every dimension of the institution.

Fred served with distinction on the Arizona Board of Regents, including as the first regent to serve two consecutive terms as board president (chair) from 2007 to 2009, helping guide Arizona's public university system during a period of important growth and change. His commitment to the University of Arizona included service as president of the University of Arizona Foundation and volunteer leadership roles as a founding member of the College of Science Advisory Board; a member of the Eller College of Management National Board of Advisors and the University of Arizona Cancer Center and University Medical Center Statewide Advisory Board; and chair of Campus Research Corporation. Fred was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science by the College of Science in 2010.

Fred’s thoughtful leadership, generosity and wise counsel left a lasting imprint on the University of Arizona. He was a steadfast advocate for the university's mission as a leading public research institution and believed deeply in the power of education, discovery, and public service to improve lives across Arizona and beyond. Fred understood the importance of investing in students, strengthening research excellence, and building partnerships that expand opportunity and economic vitality for communities throughout our state.

Most of all, Fred led with humility, integrity, and a thirst for knowledge in service to others.

On behalf of the University of Arizona, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ann, the entire Boice family, and all who knew and admired him. His impact on this university, the state of Arizona, and generations of Wildcats will endure.
