Video: University of Arizona band members remember their historic Super Bowl I performance
Nearly 60 years after members of the Arizona Symphonic Marching Band performed at the first Super Bowl halftime show at the Los Angeles Coliseum, members of the ensemble reunited to relive the experience. Director of Athletic Bands Chad Shoopman brought the performers together at Casino del Sol Stadium to watch the Jan. 15, 1967 performance.
"The Coliseum is so big, it's just, it's mind boggling," said Bob Lochner, who played trumpet with the band. "And it was full. It's the most people I've ever been in front of in my whole life."
The championship game between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs drew about 62,000 fans.
"We were bonded by the experiences, the blood, sweat and tears, the hard work on the field," added Mary Ann Nuckolls, Alumni Band president. "And it gave us a common experience that nobody else could begin to fathom if they hadn't been there, if they hadn't done it."
Watch members of the band reflect on the experience in the video below.
